In order to survive
We Must Evolve
Humankind has not woven the web of life, we are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together, all things connect.
Chief Seattle, 1786-1866
For the ‘The Crazy World of Tony Gannon’ website to survive, it must continuously evolve. A travel site, a mini Amazon, a plethora of historical, educational and research activities, a nouveau Wikipedia, a cute journal of my mortal life, A Theory of Everything, or an imaginary Dollar store – all of these combinations appear strong. But they just won’t cut it. I need people. So, phase one of this website is being introduced to a disinterested world, with no clear or certain path. Yes, I can hear the noise – this train is bound for failure. Stealing the immortal words from Seinfeld, “it’s a show about nothing”. So, my best friends are – evolution of the site, building towards a better future for all, sharing memories, a sense of humor, and inviting friends and colleagues to contribute their ‘stuff.’
“This is your chance Tony to clean up that garage”. I tried, but couldn’t think of a way out of my wife’s insistent demand. Day one / box one – I recognize immediately that the multitude of large cardboard and plastic boxes laying in front of me have some serious weight, other than the physical kind. I am retreating from the task. My modern day dilemma; it’s difficult to visualize the future, too painful to discard the past.
Mentally resisting the dumping of my personal travel, educational and work materials, quite suddenly, all this history lies pityingly in front of me. More importantly, it’s my history. We are selfish creatures and so other people’s garbage is easy to dispose of course – worn out clothes, compact discs, shoes, sneakers, books, and especially those countless volumes of faded paperwork. My faithful mini shredder huffed and puffed her way through most of that. But how do I manage the other stuff, the valuable trash – those unwanted 4-track tapes, CDs’, DVDs’, videos and pictures? In such archaic formats, my working and recreational life lies scattered and idle throughout the garage.
I called my ex son-in-law Bob, he’s a graphic artist and IT expert. “Sure, we can try to transfer the material, however I’ll need additional software.” And so thecrazyworldoftonygannon was born!
As I wade through the past, and temporarily ignore the future, I recognize that this project will be a continuous work in progress. Like the Sacrada Familia, it may never be completed. There’s that evolution theme again. If you, the reader or casual viewer would like to contribute relevant memories, share photographs, or lo and behold purchase goods from the site (yes, we will do that from time to time) – please get in touch with me. I will need all the traffic I can get. Remember that we are all on the road to nowhere, and as I discovered a long time ago, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
